This article is a step-by-step guide on how to chalk paint furniture using a Vintage Tonality brush. It covers preparing your furniture to applying the chalk paint and finishing your piece.
Make sure your furniture is clean and free of any dirt, dust, or grease. Remove any hardware, such as knobs or handles. If the furniture has a shiny or glossy finish, you may need to sand it down lightly with sandpaper to help the chalk paint adhere better to the surface. If the furniture has any dents or scratches, you can fill them with wood filler and sand them smooth before painting. Optionally, apply a coat of primer to the furniture and let it dry completely before proceeding.
Cover your work area with a drop cloth or old sheet to protect it from any drips or spills. You may also want to consider placing tiny wood blocks beneath the furniture to elevate it slightly off the ground.
Using a Vintage Tonality brush, apply the chalk paint to your furniture in thin, even coats. Start with the flat surfaces and work your way around the edges and corners. Chalk paint dries quickly, so be sure to work in small sections to avoid any brush marks. Allow the paint to dry completely between coats.
Using your Vintage Tonality brush, apply a second coat of chalk paint to your furniture. Work in thin, even coats once more, and let each coat dry completely before applying the next. Depending on the surface coverage and/or the desired aesthetic of the piece, a third coat may be required.
Once the paint is completely dry, you can lightly sand it with a fine grit sandpaper or sanding pad to create a smooth finish or distress the edges and corners for a more vintage look. Be sure to wipe away any dust with a clean cloth or tack cloth before proceeding.
Once your final coat of chalk paint is dry, you can add a finishing touch by applying a clear wax or sealer to protect your furniture. Use a Vintage Tonality brush or a lint-free cloth to apply the wax or sealer, working in small sections and wiping away any excess with a clean cloth.
